NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Riptide went 1-1 in the opening round of the Babe Ruth New England Regional tournament Friday in Lynn, Mass. Norwalk has its final pool-play game Saturday at 11 a.m. The top two teams from each pool in the eight-team tournament advance to elimination games beginning Saturday at 2:30.
Norwalk suffered a significant blow in its 1-0 loss to Kingston, Mass., Friday night. Center fielder Amy Hurd broke her nose in a collision and will be unavailable for the rest of the weekend. Hurd and Ryan Lajoie are Norwalk's top pitchers.
In its other game Friday, Norwalk defeated Vermont, 4-1. Norwalk probably will need a victory against Conn Valley South of New Hampshire in Saturday's final pool-play game to advance to the final four.
