Norwalk Skater Advances at Junior Nationals

Norwalk’s Kirstyn Nanista advanced while Stamford’s Brett Mayer failed to move on to the next round at the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships on Wednesday in Salt Lake City.

Nanista, a 13-year-old student at St. Aloysius School in New Canaan, finished sixth out of 20 skaters in the Intermediate Ladies A Group competition. Only the Top 10 competitors from two groups of 20 advanced to Friday’s short program, which will begin at 10:20 a.m. MST. The long program will be held Saturday beginning at 1:05 p.m. MST.

Kirstyn posted a score of 57.87. She was just 1.09 points away from second place, and her score was 11th out of the 20 advancing skaters.

Mayer, an eighth-grader at Turn of River in Stamford, finished 14th in the Intermediate Men's A qualifying round. His score of 43.25 was just 0.59 from the 10th and final qualifying spot. It was the second straight year Mayer failed to get past the qualifying stage.

Mayer and Nanista represent the Skating Club of Southern Connecticut in Darien. Both train, in part, out of Terry Conners Rink in Stamford. Complete results are available online .
