The Riptide, 17-5-1 on the summer, play in the USA Elite College Showcase tournament this weekend in North Haven. It will also represent Connecticut in the Babe Ruth Regional Tournament beginning July 25 in Pittsfield, Mass. The team is seeking to advance to the Babe Ruth World Series.
In Sunday’s title game, Norwalk scored the winning run in the fifth inning when Amy Hurd singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Becky Stefanatos was hit by a pitch. Mallory Rochefort fought off a change-up with a weak grounder to second. Hurd race home with the game’s only run as the ball was misplayed.
Ryan Lajoie pitched a complete game and the Riptide defense proved steady all day, holding opponents scoreless in three games on championship day.
The Riptide earned the No. 4 seed after going 1-1-1 during pool play on Saturday. Norwalk beat the CT Tigers, 3-0, in its first game on Sunday. Norwalk upset the No. 1 seeded CT Raiders Blue in the semifinals, 2-0. RBI singles by Rochefort and Tori Rodriguez in the first inning staked Norwalk to an early lead. The Riptide’s win over the Mirage avenged its only loss in the tournament
