NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Riptide 16-and-under softball team opened its Fairfield County League season this past week with a 2-1 record after taking third place at the XGAMES ASA tournament in Stratford to open their summer campaign.

The Riptide defeated Ridgefield, 14-0, pounding out 17 hits. It hosted the Fairfield Fury Wednesday, dropping a 9-6 decision and bounced back Thursday to defeat the Fairfield Light, 5-4. Tori Dugan was 4-for-4 and Mallory Rochefort had three hits, which included the winning RBI hit to secure the walk off win Thursday.

The Riptide travelled to Sterling, Mass. over the weekend to participate in the ASA Sterling Summer Kickoff Tournament where they posted a 5-1 record overall. Its loss came in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champions, the Rhode Island Hurricanes, 9-8.

In pool play, the Riptide recorded a 3-0 record by defeating the Northern Lights of New Hampshire, 3-1, Southern New Hampshire, 8-0, and the Noble Knights, 14-2, to secure the top seed in their bracket.

The Riptide defeated teams from Worcester, Mass., 9-0, and Merrimack, Mass., 6-5, Sunday to reach the semifinals. That got them a match-up against the Hurricanes, the only other undefeated team in the tournament.

The Riptide led 5-2 through five innings. In the sixth, the Norwalk team showed the effects of its sixth game in two days. The Hurricanes scored seven runs to build a 9-5 lead. The Riptide rallied for three in the seventh before the comeback fell short, and they settled for third place.

The Riptide are back in Fairfield County Softball League action this week with games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Norwalk High School.
