NORWALK, Conn. Football seasons for Norwalk and Brien McMahon High School teams kick off Friday night with road games in Danbury and Fairfield.
The Bears, under first-year coach Sean Ireland , open against Danbury at 7 p.m. The Senators, under second-year coach A.J. Albano, visit Fairfield Warde at 7 p.m. for their first contest in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
Norwalk is coming off a 4-6 season. Ireland replaced Pete Tucci, who stepped down at the end of last season. The top returning players for the Bears include Dave Klein and Pat Whalen, who were first-team all-conference linebackers last year, and senior quarterback Delshawn Wilson. Norwalk lost 18 starters from last year's team. Wilson is playing quarterback for the first time this fall.
Many observer believe the Senators (6-4 last season) could be in the hunt for a state playoff berth. They return 10 starters, including senior quarterback Damien Vega, a first-team all-league choice last year. Zack O'Connor, a fullback/linebacker, was also a first team choice last season. With a year of experience under his belt, it will also be interesting to see if Albano can continue to ride the momentum from last year's winning season.
