The “Big Red Northeast Wrestling Championships” were held at the Tsongas Center, a 6500 seat arena featuring 16 wrestling mats and 1,000 wrestlers.

“This tournament showcases some of the most talented youth wrestlers in the area as coaches and competitors saw classic battles of elite wrestlers all day long,'' coach Art Schad said. "It was impressive to be mat side to see some high level wrestling at such a young age. It was a great experience for our kids and Mad Bull program."

Leading the charge for the Mad Bulls was their three finalists, Carlo Tucci, Jason Singer and champion Nicky Singer. Placing third was Ryan Schneider, 4th place was garnered by Colin Falla and Will Motley.

Valuable team points were logged by Jacob Gonzales winning three matches, JT Schneider, Mike Bartush, Artie Cocchia, James Motley and Mikey Schneider all contributing to the Mad Bull team’s success.

“I’m not saying I was shocked that the team did so well, let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised that the kids responded to the challenge,'' Schad said. "We were not intimidated up here. Of the 13 kids we entered in the “Big Red”, six of them have only been wrestling for a year and a half, still considered newbies in some circles. They performed like seasoned veterans that have been on the wrestling circuit for many years”

The afternoon session saw 8th grade standout Jeff Cocchia placing a strong 3rd place finish after going 5-1 for the day.

Schad points out that the Mad Bull club has a new crop of beginner wrestlers ready to enter into competition after months of training and working on technique since the mid-fall season kick off.

“The kids are getting anxious to compete; we’ll take them up to Colchester this weekend and enter the whole squad in their first real tournament, which is their first step to becoming competitive wrestlers,” he said.
