They will be featured in a new book titled “AMC’s Best Kayaking in New England,” written by Michael Daugherty and set for release in spring 2015.

The Norwalk Islands offer many launch points, including the boat launch at Calf Pasture Beach Park in East Norwalk, which is dedicated to non-motorized boats. Other launching sites are located in Westport and Rowayton.

“Kayaking in and around the Norwalk Islands,” a guidebook written by David Park and released in 2009 is currently available in its fourth addition. It offers island descriptions, safety tips and information about launch sites, island wildlife and kayaking in the three local rivers.

The book is available for $10 at Calfe Mu at Calf Pasture Beach, the Small Boat Shop at Rex Marina in South Norwalk, the Dock Shop Nautical Boutique in Darien, the Outdoor Sports Center in Wilton, the Westport Historical Society Remarkable Gift Shop and online by clicking here. It also has a regularly updated Facebook page.

The Norwalk Islands sit about one mile offshore and stretch four nautical miles from Sheffield Island in the west to Cockenoe Island in Westport in the east.

According to a press release, the Norwalk Islands are comprised of nearly two dozen small islands. The largest include Sheffield, Tavern, Hoyt, Shea, Peach, Chimon, Copps, Betts, Grassy, Calf Pasture, Goose, Sprite and Cockenoe Islands.

A few of the islands are privately owned. Some are owned by the towns of Norwalk and Westport and are open to the public.  Meanwhile, others serve as wildlife sanctuaries and are off limits to the public.
