NORWALK, Conn. – Emphasizing that the team achieved their goal with an abundance of class and sportsmanship, the Common Council honored the Norwalk High School boy’s soccer team Tuesday for winning last week’s Class LL State Championship.

The entire team and coach Chris Laughton were presented with a proclamation citing their accomplishment, which was the team’s first state soccer title since 1966. The team presented Mayor Richard Moccia with a signed soccer ball that will reside in a trophy case in City Hall.

“You demonstrated to everyone what’s great about this city,” said Councilman Matt Miklave, whose son, Chris, is a member of the team. “You’ve proven that there is still sportsmanship in this world.”

Council Majority Leader Doug Hempstead said he was a sophomore in high school the last time the city won a soccer championship, and he thanked the boys for bringing pride to Norwalk. “You won with class,” he said.

Moccia said the players and coach will carry the bond they feel for one another with them for the rest of their lives.

“They can never take that state championship away from you,” Moccia said. “You carry the pride of Norwalk in you.”
