NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk High School’s basketball team escaped with a one-point win over archrival Brien McMahon High School in its first game of the season. Since then, the past five games have been smooth sailing for the undefeated Bears.

Norwalk's Roy Kane, a senior, has been one of the leaders in the early season for the Bears, who are 6-0 this season.

Norwalk (6-0) takes its winning streak to New Canaan on Friday night, and has risen to No. 5 in the state in the latest rankings from MaxPreps.

After going 9-12 last year, the Bears appear headed for their best record in the four-year tenure of coach Tom Keyes and are on pace for the most wins in the past 11 years. The Bears went  13-9 in 2012-13, when some of the key players on this year’s squad played as underclassmen.

Norwalk is led by senior forward Roy Kane, who scored 18 points and grabbed 22 rebounds in Norwalk’s most recent win, a 71-62 triumph over Trumbull on Jan. 6. Senior guard Jeremy Linton added 22 in that victory, while Zaire Wilson had nine points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears are 4-0 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference, where the only other undefeated team is Wilton (5-0 overall, 3-0 league). Two of the Bears’ league victories were over Trinity Catholic and Ridgefield, who have been perennial league contenders the past few years.

There’s still a long way to go for the Bears. Bridgeport Central (3-1) visits on Tuesday, Jan. 13. Stamford and Westhill also figure to be in the playoff mix, and Wilton is ranked No. 3 in the state by MaxPreps. The Warriors come to Norwalk on Feb. 16.

For now, however, the Bears are enjoying their best start since the 1995-96 team went 28-0 en route to the state championship. With its experience and depth, the Bears figure to be a team that could make a statement in the league and state playoffs later this winter.
