NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Fire Department’s hockey team was on its heels for the entire third period of Wednesday’s Connecticut Hockey League Tier 4 championship game. Thanks to goalie Bryan Fogle and an outstanding defense, the Fireman held on to beat the Yellow Jackets, 2-1, and win their second straight league title.
Said Fogle, who made 36 saves, “All the credit goes to the defense. The shots they were getting were from angles that all I had to do was maintain my angle. They were blocking passes in front, they were keeping pucks out of the middle. It was a great team effort.”
Anthony O’Marra’s goal with 1:09 left in the second period was the game-winning goal for Norwalk. Jamie Lasher scored in the first period for Norwalk, which finished 17-1. Its only loss came to the Yellow Jackets in overtime.
The key sequence came when Norwalk was whistled for two simultaneous two-minute penalties with 13:50 left in the game. Norwalk killed off the 5-on-3 power play, with only a few quality chances for the Yellow Jackets. “That was huge, but it was still tough,’’ Fogle said. “That gave us a little bit of momentum.”
Fogle made a sprawling save to stop a 2-on-1 later in the period, and the Fireman killed off another Yellow Jackets power play with five minutes left. The Yellow Jackets had a 5-on-3 advantage for the last 51 seconds and pulled their goalie, but Norwalk’s defense stood firm.
“That was the tightest game we’ve had all season,’’ Fogle said. “Every time we play them, they give us a game.”
O’Marra led the team with 46 points during the regular season, including 23 goals. Team captain Tim Reardon led the league with 24 goals and accumulated 40 points during the regular season.
Norwalk has a 22-man roster to maintain flexibility due to work commitments. They had 10 players, the usual number, for Wednesday’s game. “All 10 guys skated great,’’ Fogle said.
Norwalk’s roster consists of Bryan Fogle, Tim Reardon, Chris Roos, Peter Chille, Roy Gagne, Tony Matera, Jamie Lasher, Mike McCallum, Adam Tyrrell, Jay Herbert, Anthony O’Marra, Andrew Carlson, Herb Kemp, Marty O’Marra, Todd DeKlyn, Mike Hazzard, Jeremy Salley, Scott Iannucci, John Zibell, Jeff Yanter, Gary Tyrell and Peter Harrington.
