NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk High Schools field hockey team earned its first trip to a state championship game Wednesday with a 2-1victory over Glastonbury in the Class L semifinals at Sheehan High School. The third-seeded Bears will meet top-seeded Cheshire in Saturdays final.
Esthimia Kutrubis scored with six seconds left in overtime to give Norwalk (15-3-1) the win over No. 2 Glastonbury. Katie Schmidt, who scored Norwalks first goal in the second half, assisted on the game-winner.
The championship game will be played in Wethersfield on Saturday. The time will be announced on Thursday after the completion of two other field hockey semifinals, which were postponed by rain.
Christina Mace had two assists and goalie Shannon OMalley made four saves for Norwalk.
Norwalk has been a strong state tournament contender twice before under coach Kyle Seaburg, who is in his 18th season with the Bears. Norwalk reached the semifinals in 2005, when it lost to Greenwich, 3-1. The Bears also reached the quarterfinals in 2004.
Norwalk defeated Fairfield Warde and New Canaan to reach the semifinals. Cheshire, Saturdays opponent, has outscored teams 8-0 en route to the finals, including wins over Staples and Greenwich.
