NORWALK, Conn. – Highlights from recent games in the Major Division of the Norwalk Cal Ripken Baseball League:
The Batter’s Box 6, Schwartz Law 0 – Batter’s Box pitcher Brendan Huertes opened the game with four shutout innings, striking out six and doubling in a run to help his cause. Schwartz Law starter Jack Feinstein kept his team in the game and allowed just two unearned runs in his four innings and struck out nine, but a four-run fifth broke the game open. For the Batter’s Box, Clayton Bray went 3 for 3 with two doubles and one RBI. Matt Clarke had a double and pitched one scoreless inning and Alberto Regalado had a single and pitched one scoreless inning. Griffin Root had a triple and two RBIs and Peter Neglia and Chris Ehlers had a hit, one RBI and two runs scored. Leadoff hits by Feinstein in the fourth and Jack Osborne in the sixth triggered rallies, but clutch defense by The Batter’s Box put an end to both of them.
Terzian Trucking 4, TPT Engravers 1– Terzian Trucking moved into first place behind solid pitching and clutch hitting late in the game, but it wasn’t easy. TPT’s Kyle Woodring singled with two outs in the top of the first, and managed to steal second, third and home for an early 1-0 lead that held up until the bottom of the fourth as TPT starter Cory Acevedo held Terzian scoreless for his three innings. Chris Druin was also very tough after the early run, allowing no runs and striking out four. Andrew Matthews relieved him in the top of the fourth with one out and two runners on, and held TPT scoreless the rest of the way, striking out five in 2 2/3 innings of work. Both Terzian pitchers benefitted from the defensive effort of shortstop Mike Claps, who was involved with six key plays in the game. The game turned in the bottom of the fourth when Terzian opened the inning with three straight singles. Mike Diiorio led off, stole second after his base hit and scored on Jordan O’Brien’s hit. O’Brien then stole second and scored on Druin’s hit for a 2-1 lead. Terzian added two insurance runs in the fifth, sparked by Kyle Spezzano’s line single to center, Jason Thornly’s hit and an RBI ground out by Steven Pare. Woodring had two of TPT’s three hits and Chris Restaino had the other.
Entering the week, Terzian Trucking leads with a 4-3-1 record, followed by the Batter’s Box at 4-4, Schwartz Law at 3-4-1 and TPT Engravers at 2-6. Norwalk Cal Ripken records include games against New Canaan Cal Ripken’s four-team majors division.
