Norwalk Cal Ripken All-Stars Go 1-1 In States

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Cal Ripken 12-year-old All-Stars opened the state tournament with a 4-3 win against Bethel before falling to New Canaan, 11-2, Sunday.

Norwalk will attempt to stay alive in the losers’ bracket beginning Tuesday against Coventry.

In the win versus Bethel, Brendan Huertes pitched four strong innings before turning it over to Cory Acevedo, who finished up. All of Bethel's runs were unearned.

Norwalk scored all of its runs in the fourth. Chris van der Els ripped an RBI double while Griffin Root and Mike Claps also knocked in runs in the inning. Another run scored on a wild pitch. Chris Druin and Jack Feinstein also had hits in the inning.

New Canaan jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings and cruised to victory Sunday. Huertes had two hits and Jordan O’Brien laced a two-run double for Norwalk.

Tuesday’s game begins at 5:45 p.m. in Bethel. Norwalk needs to win five straight games to win the state tournament. New Canaan and New Milford play in the winners’ bracket final at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
