NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk 9s pounded Dover, N.H., in an 11-1 victory to capture the New England Regional title Thursday evening at Burnt Hill Park in Hebron.
The win secured a tournament victory, in which Norwalk outscored opponents 45-11.
Dover had no answer for Norwalk starting pitcher Charlie LaFreniere, who kept runners off the base paths. Dover managed just two hits off of LaFreniere, who allowed no earned runs, and struck out seven during his four innings of work.
In the bottom of the first, Norwalk grabbed the early lead on an RBI double by LaFreniere. An eight-run explosion in the fourth inning carried Norwalk All Star 9s to an 11-1 lead in a game ultimately shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Norwalk scored in the fourth on two wild pitches and RBIs by Wil Stalzer, Sean Lengyel, LaFreniere, Taso Panagiotidis, Keegan Cullen, and Justin Feinstein. Lengyel racked up three RBIs, including the clinching hit to score two in the fifth inning.
The tournament win concludes the 2015 All Star season for the Cal Ripken Norwalk 9-year-olds. The team was undefeated in its championship run, winning all 11 games played in the District, Connecticut State and New England Regional Tournaments.
The Championship team consisted of Devin Bowen, Kyle Close, Keegan Cullen, Henry Feinstein, Justin Feinstein, Charlie LaFreniere, Sean Lengyel, Andrew McNamara, Jack Roberts, Taso Panagiotidis, Wil Stalzer and Brian Weiss. Manager Billy Lengyel, and coaches Scott Feinstein and Randy Weiss.
