Most league teams will play their season openers on Friday. Teams from around the state started action last week.

Darien travels to Stamford for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. Other games for schools in the FCIAC include Greenwich at Trinity Catholic at 4 p.m. and at 7 p.m., games are: New Canaan at Ridgefield, Norwalk at Fairfield Warde Danbury at Staples, Brien McMahon at Wilton and Trumbull at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Darien and New Canaan met in last year’s conference title game, with the Blue Wave earning a 28-21 overtime victory. The Rams returned the favor in the Class L title game, pulling out a 21-20 victory. Both teams figure to be in the mix for league and state playoffs again this year.

Darien (12-1 last year) features quarterback Tim Graham, who threw for 24 touchdowns and 2,525 touchdowns last year. Running back Shelby Grant (838 yards, 7 TDs) also returns. Lineman Mark Evanchick, whose 25 sacks last year are tied for the most among returning players in the United States, is one of the state’s top players. He has given a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at the University of Pennsylvania.

Quarterback Mike Collins returns for the Rams (11-1 last year), when he threw for 2,624 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Darien and New Canaan meet on Thanksgiving Day in Darien at 10:30 a.m. The Blue Wave are ranked No. 2 in the state by MaxPreps, and the Rams are ranked No. 3.
