Norwalk Basketball Community Stunned By Coach's Sudden Death

NORWALK, Conn. -- The sudden and unexpected death of a former coach at Brien McMahon High School rocked the Norwalk basketball community.

Maurice "Mo" Tomlin, a fixture in the Norwalk basketball community and former coach at Brien McMahon, died suddenly Tuesday night. He was 42.

Maurice "Mo" Tomlin, a former basketball star and coach for the Senators, died Tuesday of a heart attack at age 42. Tomlin worked as a security guard at McMahon and was the school's varsity basketball coach from 2007 to 2012. He was also the former athletic director at the Carver Center in Norwalk.

"BMHS lost a great person today. God bless Mo Tomlin, his family and the McMahon community,'' said a Tweet from @McMahonBaseball on Tuesday.

Before becoming McMahon's basketball coach, Tomlin had a standout career in football and basketball for the Senators. In basketball, he won The Hour’s All-City MVP award as a junior after the 1989-90 season, when he averaged 14.8 points and nine rebounds per game.

Tomlin was also a fixture at McMahon athletic events and attended nearly all of the team's home football games As coach of the Senators, he led the team to an 18-6 record in 2010-11 as the Senators qualified for the league playoffs and reached the quarterfinals of the Class LL Tournament.

Tomlin stepped down after the 2012 season to spend more time with family. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Wednesday.
