NORWALK, Conn. – Teams expecting a down year for the Connecticut Boat Club were happily surprised in Sunday’s Northeast Junior Championships in Lowell, Mass. The Norwalk-based crew team won eight medals -- four of them gold -- and qualified two teams for next month’s U.S. championships.

“Everything came together at the right time for us,’’ said coach Liz Trond, whose team sustained heavy graduation losses each of the past two years. “This year is the most rewarding. Not many people thought we could do this. Even our novice crews, which is our youngest group ever, won a gold medal. It was amazing to see how far they came.”

The team qualified for nationals in the Women’s Youth 8+ and the Women’s Youth 4+. The 8+ consisted of coxswain Kassandra Boliakis, Fairfield’s Jessica Ferrante, Wilton’s Katherine Squitieri, Ridgefield’s Meg Galloway, Paige Voigt of King in Stamford, Isabel Fitter of Fairfield, and Darien’s Juliet Ruhe, Kendra Shutts and Kate Tyrrell.

The 4+ crew consisted of coxswain Courtney Lincoln of Darien, Ferrante, Squitieri, Shutts and Galloway.

“They raced three times on Sunday, and really had to go hard 90 minutes before the 8s went off,’’ Trond said. “It was just an exceptional effort.”

Trond said Ferrante, who was in the junior varsity boat for the past few years, was promoted to the varsity boat last week. Ruhe also returned to the Varsity 8. She had been with that crew earlier in the spring.

“To be honest, I didn’t know if we were going to get one boat there, let along two,’’ Trond said. “We’ll have to decide if we can row both at nationals.”

CBC won the Junior Varsity 8, third Varsity 8 and Novice 8. Trond’s team also won the Junior Varsity 4 and medaled in the Novice 4+ A final with a silver and a bronze.

CBC’s lineup on the Third Varsity 8 that won gold was  Anabel Brown, Payton Garrity, Tayla Daniel, Kat Eddie, Meg Kynast, Claire Lincoln, Andy Bernhardt, Ava Colarusso and Tyson Maley.

The Junior Varsity 8 gold medalist boat consisted of Courtney Lincoln, Kylie Maier, Katie DeHaas, Casey Clifford, Sarah Mudd, Bea Nash, Haley Bower, Natalie Yannopolous and Kelly Caione.

The gold medalists on the Novice 8 were Rory Fernandez, Erin Rigney, Claire Kelley, Lauren Squitieri, Julia Cornacchia, Madeline Mauboussin, Katie Bower, Ari D'agosto and Claire Plunkett. The Junior Varsity 4 that won gold consisted of Kassy Boliakis, Kylie Maier, Haley Bower, Tayla Daniel and Payton Garrity.

The Novice 4 that won silver was Fernandez, Rigney, Cornacchia, D'agosto and Plunkett. The bronze went to Anabel Brown, Kat Eddie, Andy Bernhardt, Ava Colarusso and Maley.
