NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk eighth-grade boys basketball team used a 9-0 run midway through the second half Monday to take control of a tight game and defeat New Canaan, 49-43, in the Dave Finch Tournament at Ben Franklin School.
Ralph Manigat scored 14 points to lead Norwalk, while Pierre Coffy added 12. Joey Cantey scored 11 points, and Jakari Gainer added six for Norwalk.
New Canaan led 36-30 before Norwalk surged ahead, capped by a basket by Manigat. Norwalk maintained the lead the rest of the way, and a three-pointer by Cantey with two minutes remaining put Norwalk up, 48-41.
Norwalk trailed 13-10 in the first half before it went on an 11-2 run to take a 21-15 lead. Norwalk led 25-18 at halftime before New Canaan rallied to take a 29-28 lead with 11:20 remaining. New Canaan continued its surge as Tyler Sweeney hit back-to-back three-pointers to give New Canaan a 36-30 lead.
Norwalk returns to action Tuesday when it plays Westport at 7:30 p.m. The tournament continues through Saturday. Norwalk, 5-2 on the season, returns to Fairfield County Basketball League action Jan. 7 against Weston.
In another eighth-grade game on Wednesday, Westport defeated Shelton, 75-45.
