Norwalk 6th Grade Packers Win State Football Crown

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Packers 6th grade football team routed Meriden, 34-0, to win the state title on Saturday.

The Packers, coached by Bert Borges, are 10-1 on the season and will play defending national champion Wellesley, Mass., in the New England semifinals. The semifinal is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 16, in Walpole, Mass. The winner advances to the New England championship game on Nov. 23 in Nashua, N.H.

The Packers have won three straight Colonial Youth Conference championships. 

Khalil Eason ran 21 yards for a touchdown and Nemo Harris ran in from 10 yards out to stake Norwalk to a 16-0 first quarter lead.

Norwalk opened the second half with a 50-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard run by Harris. A.J. Robinson's 10-yard touchdown pass to Eason gave Norwalk a 28-0 lead in the third quarter. Eason's interception return accounted for the Packers' final points.

Eason had two interceptions, and Austin Hall had an interception. Christian Schaffer added two sacks. Roderick Olson and Koy Price also had sacks.

Norwalk, which lost its first game of the season to Hartford, beat the same team for the state title. Norwalk has shut out five opponents and allowed one touchdown or less in eight of its 10 games.

Norwalk's roster is Angel Betancourt Jr., Tommy Brown, Jack Burley, Jake Calabrese, Artie Cocchia, Kamari Davis, Lorenzo Delfino, Khalil Eason, Nick Farrar, Matt Goldstein, Austin Hall, Naggee Hamlette, Thomas Hargrove, Nemo Harris, Jake Lusardo, Gary Miller, Roderick Olson, Jake Pomponi, Koy Price, A.J. Robinson, Mike Ruggiero, Christian Schaffer, Donte Scullark, Dean Tsiranides, Izhaya Valentine and Tyler Whitteaker.

The head coach is Bert Borges, who is assisted Lawrence Davis, Greg Goldstein, Darrick Eason, Joe Borges, Idris Price and Andre Robinson and by team mom Gloria Cocchia.
