NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Girls Basketball Association sixth-grade girls are taking an 18-game winning streak into the final month of the season. And most of the games have not challenged coach Ricky Fulton's players.

“They’re learning and they’re very coachable,’’ Fulton said. “I didn’t think we’d be playing at this level quite yet. They’re paying attention and they’re working together.”

Norwalk won the Ridgefield Basketball Association championship Sunday with a win over Newtown. The team also won the New Castle Martin Luther King Holiday Tournament in Chappaqua, N.Y., and the Christian Heritage Tournament in Trumbull during Christmas break. Norwalk is also 9-0 in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Norwalk has outscored  league opponents 336-188.

“This year the girls got bigger, they’re running harder and they understand the game a little bit more,’’ said Fulton, whose team won the regular season title last year in the Fairfield County League but lost in the season-ending tournament to Newtown. “They’re dribbling has improved, their foul shooting, and they’re passing the ball better. They’re working better as a team.”

In a league win over Wilton on Saturday, Norwalk led 12-9 after the first period. The game quickly became a blowout with a 12-0 Norwalk run in the first three minutes of the second quarter, which propelled Norwalk to a 26-14 halftime lead. Norwalk ended up with a 49-33 route.

Norwalk’s roster consists of Aija Andrews, Sanaa Boyd, Kaitlyn Covello, Kaitlyn Davis, Olivia Davis, Tamia Fulton, Janelle Johnson, Sawyer Milillo, Jocelyn Mullins, Michelle Perea and Ashley Wilson. Fulton and Boyd earned MVP honors in tournament wins this season, while Kaitlyn Davis and Perea were also honored for their play in tournaments.

Norwalk went 16-5 last season and won the league's regular season title. It lost to Newtown in the finals of the league's season-ending tournament.

“We’re doing well, but we have to keep pushing forward and take it step by step,’’ Fulton said. “If we want to get to where we want to go, we have to keep on improving.”
