New Canaan Rower Finishes 4th at World Meet

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – New Canaan's Andrew Campbell finished fourth Friday in the lightweight singles sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Campbell, a sophomore at Harvard University, had been hoping for his second international medal of the summer.

He finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:06.64. Campbell, who had the second fastest time in qualifying, held medal position until the final few strokes of the race, according to the USRowing website. New Zealand's Duncan Grant grabbed third in 7:03.3. Denmark's Henrik Stephansen won the gold and Italy won the silver.

Campbell rowed for New Canaan crew out of the Norwalk-based Maritime Rowing Club. Earlier this summer, he earned a silver medal at the World Under-23 Championships.

The only other rower from Fairfield County who competed Friday was Rowayton's Brian de Regt. He and Jonathan Winter finished second in a lightweight doubles sculls semifinal. They race again Saturday.

The best news of the day for the U.S.? The women's eight won the gold medal for its sixth straight world championship.

The championships are the first opportunity for nations to qualify crews for the 2012 Olympic Games, although specific athletes won't be selected until next spring.
