The team, comprised of student athletes from across Fairfield and Westchester counties, is coached by Yan Vengerovskiy of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, renowned for his ability to turn out national, world and Olympic rowers.
Graduates of the program go on to study and row at some of the most elite universities in the nation. Vengerovskiy is the coach of two Olympians --- New Canaan Crew alumni Andrew Campbell and Charlie Cole --- who participated in the recent summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and are being recognized at Friday night's New Canaan High School football game.
“We really hope this demonstration will expose both middle school and high school kids to the sport and encourage them to try it,” Vegerovskiy said.
The erg-a-thon event is designed to raise funds and seek sponsorships to purchase new equipment for the program. Members of the New Canaan Crew team will be on hand to demonstrate the use of the erg rowing machine while collecting donations to support the effort. The erg is a machine equipped with a sliding seat and is designed to simulate rowing.
“Shells (boats) and the various equipment required to maintain a crew team are very expensive,” said Andrew Campbell, president of the New Canaan Crew club. “The team is wholly dependent upon donations and fundraisers due to its classification as a club sport.”
The club is not eligible for booster funding either. A new quad shell can cost over $35,000. Oars can run as much as $750-$1000.
