NORWALK, Conn. – The Mid-Fairfield Connecticut Stars under-16 girls hockey team won the Polar Bears tournament last weekend in Newington. The Stars beat Assabet White Major of Massachusetts for the championship, 2-1, in double overtime.
Kerry Sheehan-Delany scored the go-ahead goal with an assist from Madison Lyford.
Mid-Fairfield went 4-1-1 in the tournament, and surrendered just five goals. Goalie Zowie Caouette had three shutouts.
The Stars beat Brewster, N.Y., in the semifinals, 2-1. They also defeated the San Jose Sharks, 1-0, and RYHA of North Carolina, 2-0. Mid-Fairfield lost its first game to Brewster, 3-0, and tied the Lady Islanders of New York, 0-0.
In the semifinal win over Brewster, Meg Fay's goal with three minutes remaining sent the game into overtime. Kate Klimaszewski assisted on the goal. Lyford's goal 35 seconds into overtime won it for the Stars.
