Brien McMahon junior Chris Madaffari finished ninth to lead Norwalk runners in Thursday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships at Waveny Park in New Canaan. Madaffari finished the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 16:50. Danbury's Alex Levine won the race in 15:57.
Danbury won the boys team title, and Wilton captured the girls crown. Fairfield Ludlowe's Heather Moriarty won the girls race.
Madaffari ran with the leaders early on, but he couldn't match a move by Levine at 1-mile mark. "I didn't think the first mile was as fast as it was,'' said Madaffari, who said he clocked the first mile in about 4:57. "I just tried to hang on the best I could."
McMahon coach Jeff Brenston said Madaffari made the correct decision to run with the lead pack for as long as possible. "If you let them get too far out, it's hard to get it back,'' Brenston said.
Norwalk's Mike Corasaniti was 18th in 17:11. Norwalk finished ninth with 250 points, and McMahon was 13th with 350. In the girls race, Norwalk (447 points) was 13th and McMahon (469) was 15th. Neither school had a runner in the top 30.
