McMahon Girl Wins Sprint at State Track

Brien McMahon’s Shelly Lindo won the 100 and finished third in the 200 to lead the way for Norwalk athletes at Tuesday’s Class LL track and field meet at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.

Lindo won the 100 in 12.58 and was third in the 200 in 26.18. Norwalk’s Crystle Hill finished fourth in the 100 in 13.22. Lindo was also third in the 100-meter hurdles.

McMahon’s Kim McElveen finished second in the discus with a toss of 103 feet, five inches. She was also eighth in the shot put.

Norwalk had a breakout performance from freshman Claire Turner, who finished fifth in the 800. She shaved nearly four seconds off her seeded time, running 2:24.22. Turner's time broke a school record that had stood since 1982. She also ran on Norwalk’s 4 x 400 relay, which finished 13th. Ivy Chen added a sixth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, and Rottisha Lewis was sixth in the triple jump.

In the boys meet, McMahon’s Clment Abonyi finished fourth in the triple jump. He jumped 42 feet, 8 ¾ inches and missed the qualifying standard for the State Open by a quarter of an inch.
