The Norwalk Junior Soccer Association's Maniacs, its under-13 boys travel team, tied the Newtown Strikers, 1-1.
The game was a hard fought battle between the two teams, with the Maniacs controlling most of the game. Newtown scored a goal in the first half. The Maniacs tied up the game in the second half, with a goal coming from forward Eric van der Els, assisted by Alex Espinosa.
Goalie Thomas Mendola and defenders Ciran O'Reilly, Ian Anderson, Christian Willkehr and Jeffrey Arteaga led Norwalk's strong defense. Forward Marvin Best, with midfielders Marcus Garcia, Ivan Avalos, Diego Arteaga, Jaime Mandujano, Alex Ceja, Luis Mandujano and Diego Partoda, kept control of the ball for the majority of the game.
The tie allows Norwalk to play in the SouthWest division of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association's U-13 boys playoffs Saturday at Treadwell Park in Newtown. The Maniacs will challenge the top-seeded Newtown Strikers. The winner will vie for the district championship title Sunday in Newtown.
