Romanello struck out seven and walked 2 for King (8-7). Shortstop R.J. Moavero preserved the no-hitter with a fine fielding play in the seventh, when he charged a weak tapper and gunned out the runner at first base.
It was the first no-hitter in the promising career of Romanello, a sophomore who starred in Norwalk Little League and other youth leagues in Norwalk.
“All of my pitches were working,’’ Romanello said. “I have to give a lot of credit to my catcher, Chris Ruiz. He called a great game.”
Romanello, who said he threw no-hitter in Little League, said he realized in the fifth inning he was working on a no-hitter. “I tried not to jinx it. I said something about it and my teammates got mad at me. They said just go out and pitch.”
The victory was critical for King as it tries to rally late in the season to make the Fairchester Athletic Association tournament. Romanello said he probably won’t comprehend the magnitude of the accomplishment until later.
“I don’t think about it any differently now, to me it was just another game,’’ said Romanello, who will play for the Norwalk Babe Ruth 15-year-old team this summer. “I’m sure it will come to me tomorrow.”
