Intensity Hosts Tennis Fundraiser for Africa

Sixteen of the top teaching professionals in Fairfield County will compete for a $500 cash prize June 11 at Intensity Fitness and Tennis Club in Norwalk. The event will benefit Oyebog Tennis Academy, a not-for-profit tennis program for children in Cameroon.

The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $75 at the door and $50 if purchased in advance. The event will feature food, speed-serve and point play with the pros, and viewing the pro-challenge tournament.

Joseph Oyebog, a former Davis Cup player, started his tennis academy 15 years ago to provide free tennis lessons to children in Cameroon. Thousands of kids have benefited from his program, learning a skill that provides a path to a better education. Twenty of the academy's graduates are playing tennis in the United States, four on college scholarships. Though education is the goal, Oyebog says, "Over war, malaria and HIV, the program is a safe haven for children, a place to go where they feel great about themselves and think about something other than food or medicine."

Primarily funded by Oyebog, Fairfield County contributors and its local board of directors, the Oyebog Tennis Academy is gaining recognition as a way to help kids in Africa who otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn tennis and use those skills to receive a higher education.
