Lucy Grinalds of the Connecticut Boat Club won the silver medal in her division at the Crash-B sprints indoor rowing competition last month in Boston. Grinalds' medal capped a strong performance by Norwalk-based CBC, as its rowers recorded seven personal records.
Grinalds, a senior at Fairfield Ludlowe who will attend Harvard, took second in the lightweight junior division. She rowed 2,000 meters in 7:22.4. Eighty-three girls competed, and CBC teammate India Knight took sixth in 7:37.1.
Lucy's sister Rosie, a Ludlowe junior, recorded a personal best of 7:14.3 and finished eighth in the Junior Women's division. She was the third American in a strong field that featured 205 rowers. Abby Stevenson (10th, 7:16.6) and Abbie Frey (12th, 7:19.5) also bettered the 7:20 time standard of the U.S. Junior National team. Victoria Babchak was 20th, and Maria Lycouris was 27th. CBC had five of the Top 22 performances by U.S. girls.
CBC had14 girls compete, its highest number ever at the indoor event. CBC's 45-member team is wrapping up indoor training as it prepares to move outdoors in anticipation of its first event, the San Diego Crew Classic on March 31. CBC is the defending champion in the Varsity 8 and the Junior Varsity 8 in the regatta.
Olivia Taylor recently became the 11th CBC rower to commit to a Division I college for the fall season. The Darien resident will join Christine Bragg, also of Darien, at UCLA.
