Firemen Claim Industrial Crown

The Norwalk Fire Department softball team is a mix of veterans and up-and-coming players who have recently joined the team. On Thursday, they were crowned champions.

Matt Zeremsky scored the winning run in the seventh as the Fire Department defeated Reed Expo, 8-7, at Calf Pasture Beach. Veteran team member Gene DeAngelas said it was the team's first Industrial League title since 2005.

"We're scrappy, we're always trying to put up runs,'' manager and leadoff hitter Dennis Dustin said. "It's hard to get everyone to the games because we all work nights. For the playoffs, we made sure we got guys off."

Zeremsky led off the seventh with a single. Dave Dustin singled, and Zeremsky moved to third, then scored when Dennis Dustin reached safely on a hard-hit grounder to short. Reed threatened in the bottom. But veteran pitcher John Eagan wriggled out of the two-on, two-out jam to finish with three straight scoreless innings.

"It's always a tight game with Reed Expo,'' Dennis Dustin said. "We had some clutch hitting and made some plays in the field. We pick each other up."

Eagan had two hits and two RBIs for the Fire Department. Marc Chimento ripped two hits, including a triple, and also had two RBIs. The Fire Department rallied with two runs in the fifth to forge a 7-7 deadlock on Chimento's RBI triple and an RBI single by DeAngelas.

Brendan Tianai smashed a home run and had two RBIs for Reed, which bolted to a 3-0 in the first inning. Reed led 7-5 after Mike Kisken's two-run triple in the fourth.

The Fire Department's roster includes Dennis Dustin, John Eagan, Marc Chimento, Gene DeAngelas, Brian Fogle, Brandon Adams, Chris Lasore, Danny Stefanides, Keith Badal, Matt Badal, Matt Zeremsky and David Dustin.
