Darien, Norwalk Runners Earn Cross Country Honors

Darien's Alex Ostberg and Norwalk's Chris Madaffari  earned All-American honors with their performances at Saturday's National Junior Olympic Cross Country championships at Hoover, Ala.

Ostberg finished 10th in the Youth Boys Division, while Madaffari, a junior at Brien McMahon, took 24th in the Intermediate Boys race.

Ostberg finished the 4-kilometer course in 13:12, just 17 seconds behind winner Miguel Bautista. Ostberg, competing for the Wilton Running Club, was the highest finisher among boys born in 1997. The nine runners who  finished ahead of Alex were born in 1996. There were 304 runners in the race.

The race capped a tremendous fall season for Ostberg, 13, who won state and regional championships earlier this fall. He also won the Connecticut Middle School state championship and the Western Connecticut Conference Middle School title.

Madaffari ran 17:08 for the 5-kilometer course. Madaffari punched his ticket to the Junior Olympics by finishing second in the state and fourth in the region.
