NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk PAL Cougars won the Norwalk Athletic Association Division 2 softball championship by defeating the Angela Mia Cubs, 4-2, in a well-played game from both teams from start to finish. Mariah Ventrella got the victory while striking out five.
The Cougar scoring started in the first inning when Dina DiBlasio singled and was driven in on a Sarah O'Conner single. Ventrella led off the fourth inning with a double and was then driven in by a double by O'Conner. Jessica Giglio's long triple then plated O'Conner. Ayhana Santaella's RBI bunt single drove in the fourth and final run for the Cougars.
The defense was led by shortstop O'Conner and second baseman Gabrielle Arena, who made several great plays. Mackenzie Stamp continued her solid catching and made the final out of the game by catching a pop-up.
The Cougars finished 13-0, including an 11-0 run during the regular season, and outscored opponents, 136-31.
They faced a tough fight in the final from the Cubs, who won three of its last four games to reach the finals. Skyler LaRusso, Samantha Troetti, Brianny Garcia, Brenda Garcia, Julia Sferlazza, Kate Weber, Jennifer Carriera, Christina Ferreira, Kristin Carriera, Christy Russo, Annabel Wert and Catherine Petropoulos played well for the Cubs.
