NORWALK, Conn. – Connecticut Boat Club had two top 20 finishes at the Head of the Charles over the weekend, the signature regatta of the fall rowing season.
The Norwalk-based tream finished ninth in the Varsity 8 race out of 85 crews. The Varsity 4+ finished 16th out of 85, and the B Varsity 8 finished 39th after starting 83rd. The regatta was held on the Charles River in Boston.
“This means that next year we are guaranteed to have at least three boats, and we may get another through the lottery system,’’ coach Liz Trond said. “This is an incredible feat for a small, girls-only team.”
The Varsity 8 crew included cox Courtney Lincoln, Meg Galloway, Kendra Shutts, Isabel Fitter, Katie deHaas, Katherine Squitieri, Sarah Konishesky, Paige Voigt and Casey Clifford.
The Varsity 4 included cox Kassy Boliakis, Jessica Ferrante, Julia Cornacchia, Natalie Puente and Natalie Yannopolous. The second Varsity 8 had cox Rory Fernandez, Haley Bower, Kelly Caione, Payton Garrity, Juliet Ruhe, Amy Bernhardt, Claire Plunkett, Erin Rigney and Claire Kelly.
“All three coxswains did a great job of steering the course safely and avoiding collisions,’’ Trond said. “Many boats hit bridges, hit other boats, clashed oars. I am really proud of our coxswains. This is the most difficult race course in the world.”
