Breaking News: Black Ice Advisory Issued For Melting Snow Refreezing

Carver Seventh Graders Show Promise

The Carver Center's seventh-grade boys basketball team captured the Fairfield County Basketball League championship last season. Now a new cast of players is showing early-season promise as the community agency's team looks to repeat.

Carver stands at 5-3 for the season and 2-1 in the FCBL. It handed the Darien YMCA eighth-grade Blue team its only loss in nine games Saturday with a 41-36 decision at Middlesex Middle School in Darien. Kyle Davis scored 14 to lead Carver, and Jah Menkah scored 12.

"It's a good win,'' said Mike McElveen, the Carver Center recreation director, who coached the team in the absence of David Williams on Saturday. "They look like they have some promise."

Carver led Darien 20-15 at halftime and 30-25 after three quarters. The lead was down to 36-34 with 3:30 left, and Darien twice came down with an opportunity to tie or go ahead with a 3-pointer. After a Davis free throw, Darien scored with a minute remaining to get within a point. Davis' basket with 45 seconds left put Carver up by three, and Alex Jerome's basket after another Darien miss iced it

Carver's three losses have come by a total of eight points, including a 51-49 loss to Westport PAL on Friday. After a break for the holidays, Carver returns to action on Jan. 8 against Darien White.
