March Madness isn't confined to college or high school basketball. Matchups in the Fairfield County Basketball League can be equally thrilling.
The Norwalk Carver Center seventh-grade boys won its quarterfinal Saturday by rallying from a 14-point deficit to stun Stamford, 57-52, at Weston High School in the B South Division. Carver (17-6) advances to Sunday's semifinals against the winner of a game between Weston and Newtown Blue. Stamford finishes its season at 11-9.
"We worked on getting the ball inside,'' Carver coach David Williams said. "My players told me we could take it to the basket against them. We just had to attack."
Kyle Davis scored 16 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, for Carver. Anthony Burden had 17, while Janmerkiah Green-Younger had 12 and Alex Jerome eight. Carver outscored Stamford, 25-10, in the fourth quarter.
Stamford led 40-26 late in the third quarter. Carver chipped away and was down 42-32 entering the fourth. Stamford went 49-42 with 4:47 left after a basket by Aaron Pettiford. Burden's three-pointer jump-started a Carver rally that saw them outscore Stamford 15-3 in the final 4:30. Norwalk took the lead for good on a basket by Davis with 1:02 to play. After a Stamford turnover, Tyler Navarro scored on a driving layup with 36.8 seconds to go. Stamford missed its final three shots and Burden scored the final points with 25 seconds left.
Carver Center defeated Stamford, 55-53, back in December. Carver ended the season with a six-game winning streak in league play. "All these teams are good in this division,'' Williams said. "I think in the end we just wanted it a little bit more."
