NORWALK, Conn. – If teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference were figuring on keying on Brien McMahon’s Kyle Jordan, teammate Trevon Forney gave them something else to think about Friday night.
Forney, a junior, scored three touchdowns. That included the game-winning one on an 89-yard screen pass with 46 seconds remaining to give the Senators a breathtaking 33-28 win over Fairfield Warde. Forney scored the first time he touched the ball on a 98-yard touchdown run and an 89-yard kickoff return. He rushed for 128 yards on just six carries.
“They found about Forney tonight,’’ Brian McMahon coach A.J. Albano said. “He was a good player for us last year, but we had some seniors and juniors in front of him. He’s a phenomenal football player. We said let’s get the ball to Trey and see if we can make something happen.”
Forney saved his best for last. McMahon led throughout and was up 27-13 when Jordan ran in from a yard out and quarterback Michael Newcomb hit Forney with a conversion pass with 10:26 left. Warde rallied, however, and took the lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Dawud Mohamed with 1:17 to play.
McMahon got the ball back for its final drive and lost 11 yards on its first play. On second and 21, Newcomb tossed an innocent-looking screen pass to Forney. He did the rest.
“I think they thought I’d go to the sidelines and get out of bounds to stop the clock,’’ Forney said. “I knew they’d over pursue to the sideline. I cut it back inside and then went up the sideline.”
Once Forney gets in the open field, there’s no catching him. In all three of his touchdowns, he got through the smallest of seams. “We had our hands on him a couple of times and couldn’t get him down,’’ Fairfield Warde coach Duncan Dellavolpe said. “He’s as quick as can be.”
After the Senators lost several games last season on late touchdowns, it was their turn to win one. “It was important to win this one,’’ Forney said. “We didn’t want to lose the first game of the season and play next week with our heads down.”
Forney gives McMahon a much-needed balance to its attack, and it will only get better as sophomore Newcomb gains experience at quarterback. Jordan (15 carries, 48 yards) is also an electric runner. With him and Forney in the backfield, there’s no telling how far the Senators can go.
