The Southern Connecticut Storm Special Hockey, based in Bridgeport, is dedicated to providing children from the age of 5 through young adult with a developmental disability the opportunity to play ice hockey.

UCT — a nonprofit financial services membership organization — is offering an online voting contest with several teams from around the country as “contestants” for its prizes of $5,000 or $10,000.

Equipment, trips and time on the ice (currently two hours a week) cost a lot, as well as scholarships for some of the Storm players. Should the team win this online contest, it would put the winnings to good use. Help out the team and vote at the UCT Facebook site here.

The Storm therapeutic program teaches skating and hockey skills, as well as gives the player the opportunity to play a team sport. Through hockey, the program emphasizes the continued development of individual life skills such as self-reliance, dependability, focus and confidence. Prior skating or hockey experience is not required.

Begun nine years ago with eight players, there are now 50 players of all ages into their twenties, divided into two teams based on skating ability. New players are taught to ice skate one-on-one by volunteer coaches and high school mentors. They then are taught to play a gentler form of hockey with no checking--learning critical life skills while playing hockey with teammates.

The Team has gone to special hockey tournaments in New Jersey, Maryland and New York, and are planning on a tournament in Lake Placid for end of season.
