The News Times reported that Danbury High School Principal Dan Donovan read the apology to students Friday. The apology recognized that the language was offensive to the school community and broader community, and that the chants did not reflect the values of Wilton High School, according to the News Times.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton called for the apology this week in a letter to Wilton High School Principal Robert O'Donnell, saying that the chants were "troubling and offensive to our community."

A group of Wilton High School alumni also wrote an open letter to O'Donnell, asking him to acknowledge the incident and respond.

After the apology was issued Friday, Boughton wrote on Twitter: "Apology accepted. Thank you Wilton HS for building bridges."
