NORWALK, Conn. -- Connecticut State Archaeologist Brian Jones will present a free lecture on “An Ice Age Odyssey: The Pope Mastodon’s Epic Journey” at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Norwalk Community College Gen Re Forum.

The public is invited to this event sponsored by the NCC Archaeology Club.

Jones will discuss a massive mastodon bone discovered in 1913 when workmen were digging a drainage ditch on the Alfred A. Pope estate in Farmington and hit what they thought was a tree.

The workmen contacted Yale Peabody Museum, and the massive mastodon bone was later completely excavated by the museum’s scientists.

Jones will present the results of recent accelerator mass spectrometry testing obtained by analysis of a fragment of the mastodon’s tusk.

He also will discuss the importance of adding to the “chronological data of Connecticut’s ancient environment.”

Norwalk Community College is at 188 Richards Ave.
