The program is a nationally developed STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) syllabus of the Boy Scouts of America. Children from South Norwalk are participating in a six-week, hands-on science program that blends time-tested character building traits with hands-on STEM modules, according to a press release.
The Connecticut Yankee Council has provided all the essential materials, which were paid for by generous individuals, along with corporate support from Eversource, United Illuminating, Rogers Corporation, Riggs Distler, and ABNote Corp.
This summer program is vital to the children of South Norwalk because it bridges the gap between the school year's "After the Bell" program and the summer hiatus, according to a press release. The long-term goal is for continued collaboration between the two organizations to provide additional value added programs, such as STEM throughout the year and to train and grow the program at other organizations throughout Fairfield County, according to a press release.
“The council would like to see this program replicated throughout Fairfield County to bring STEM to more underprivileged children. We see the success of the SoNoCC pilot program as the basis for a train-the-trainer model to do this,” said Charles Flowers, Scout executive/chief executive officer Connecticut Yankee Council, in a press release.
Warren Pena, board chairman of South Norwalk Community Center, said the partnership, along with the "After the Bell" program, is revitalizing the center and the community.
“The program is preparing students to aim higher and think out-of the box," Pena said in a press release. "It’s also revitalizing the center and Ryan Park as we see kids and their parents caring about both. We look forward to a long term partnership with the Connecticut Yankee Council."
