Sacred Heart University Adds New College Of Nursing

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University has added a College of Nursing, effective July 1.

“The transition to a College of Nursing will help us compete nationally with nursing colleges—not only for the best undergraduate nursing students, but also for the most talented master’s and doctoral students and doctoral-level faculty members,” said Laura Niesen de Abruna, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs at SHU.

"Our award-winning nursing faculty members are known for their clinical expertise, initiatives in global health and use of state-of-the-art technology,” said Mary Alice Donius, dean of the College of Nursing.

The College of Nursing will have approximately 500 undergraduate and 900 graduate students in its first fall semester. The new college will employ 30 full-time faculty members

The new college joins SHU's five other colleges: the Jack Welch College of Business, the Isabelle Farrington College of Education, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Health Professions and University College.

SHU's nursing program was launched in 1980 as a program for registered nurses to receive a bachelor's degree.
