The Walkathon is a student-driven fundraiser. Last year, 89 percent of the students participated and brought in a total of $29,000. The money was used for buying new technology for classrooms, so that all students have access to the equipment.

Nearly $60,000 has been raised since the first Walkathon in 2012. Principal Sara Reilly will host this year, with Mayor Harry Rilling and Superintendent Manuel Rivera to attend as special guests.

Rowayton’s own Joan Diamandis, writer of “Hail Rowayton,” the school song, also plans to attend. She has four grandchildren who attend the school.

The types of technology that will be purchased through the fundraiser include Chrome Books, eBooks, tablets and more, along with school enrichment programs. They help with teaching the English Language Common Core curriculum through providing students with more access to nonfiction and text-based reading. They also help keep students up to date on current events.
