The family literacy event involved families in the community reading the same book, "Winners Take All" by Fred Bowen, during April so that the community could become "one giant book club," according to a press release. The distribution of the books was made possible by the school PTO along with Norwalk's Factset Research Systems.
"The central theme of the story is honesty and the importance of working together for a positive result," school officials said. "Throughout the three-week event the children’s experience was enhanced by several learning opportunities. For example, daily trivia questions were posed to students each morning on the announcements, a Guest Reader Day on May 2, which included city officials and local sports players."
The event concluded May 8 when the school hosted Bowen for the day. The author spent his time working with the students and then led a “community read” discussion with parents and kids at night, according to the release.
"The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable — studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, builds vocabulary, and cultivates a positive feeling about books and learning," school officials said. "Although this wonderful book is intended as a gift to the Cranbury School children, if they choose, they may 'pay it forward' to another school community in need."
