Norwalk Teens Can Enroll In Careers Program At Maritime Aquarium

NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk High School students can enroll in a free after-school program at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk that will help them with their studies and prepare them for college.

Enrollment is open through Wednesday to students grades 9-11 for TeMPEST (Teen Maritime Program Emphasizing Science and Technology). The program meets after school once a week throughout the school year at the aquarium and is free for students attending any Norwalk high school.

TeMPEST provides unique hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as opportunities for students to interact with aquarium animals and staff. In addition, TeMPEST focuses on preparing students for college through question-and- answer sessions, day trips to local schools and bringing experts in to speak on the application process. Juniors can take part in a three-day trip to visit college campuses.

TeMPEST also helps students build and enhance skills that will be useful through high school and beyond, including tips on teamwork and lessons on public speaking.

TeMPEST was launched during the 2012-13 school year from a $26,000 grant from Fairfield County’s Community Foundation. The program has grown each year – up to 60 students this year. A $150,000 grant from Newman’s Own Foundation is enabling the aquarium to continue TeMPEST through the 2015-16 school year.
