NORWALK, Conn. -- Yvette Goorevitch has been appointed by the Norwalk Board of Education as the new Chief of Specialized Learning and Student Services for Norwalk Public Schools.

Goorevitch is currently director of special and alternative education in the City School District of New Rochelle, N.Y.

"During her 25-year tenure with New Rochelle, Goorevitch took a school system with special education challenges, and an economic and ethnic make-up similar to that of Norwalk, and transformed it into a model district for students with special needs," Norwalk Public Schools said. "A seasoned instructional leader and astute financial manager, Goorevitch translated a natural empathy for students and families into greater opportunities and results for children who require specialized instruction and care."

Prior to her work with New Rochelle, Goorevitch served for 12 years in special education for the New York City Department of Education, District 7, where her roles included district administrator of special education and chairperson for the committee on special education. Goorevitch began her career as a special education teacher in New York City.

In 2016, Goorevitch received the NYCASE Special Education Administrator of the Year Award, which honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and accomplishment for the benefit of students with disabilities. Goorevitch was also recognized by the Hudson Valley Special Education Parent Center and Westchester Institute for Human Development for her work with parents.

Goorevitch earned a Master of Science in Special Education and completed M.Ed. coursework, both from Columbia University, Teacher’s College. She has also completed advanced Ed.D degree coursework at Teacher's College, Columbia University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Brooklyn College.
