Norwalk, McMahon Girls Eligible For Chelsea Cohen Scholarship

NORWALK, Conn. -- The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced it has established the Chelsea Cohen Memorial Scholarship, which will recognize a top female scholar and athlete from Norwalk with a financial award towards higher education.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission will award $2,500 scholarships to one student each from Brien McMahon and Norwalk in memory of Chelsea Cohen, a former Norwalk soccer player.

Criteria for nomination include:

  • Academic honors
  • Participation in one or more varsity level high school sports or teams
  • Nominee must exemplify sportsmanship, leadership, excellent character and athletic prowess

Eligible candidates must be a graduating senior at Brien McMahon or Norwalk High School. Schools can recommend three candidates for consideration. A Scholarship Selection Committee will determine the winner of the Chelsea Cohen Memorial Scholarship and the selection process will include a personal interview.

The scholarship recipients will receive the award upon successful completion of her senior year of high school and the selection to a four-year accredited college or university.  Preferential consideration will be given to applicants who are also involved in activities such as music, theater and community service.

One student each from Norwalk and Brien McMahon will receive $2,500. Awards will be given out at the schools' respective awards assemblies near the end of school year. After this year, the scholarship will be $5,000 for one student-athlete from either Norwalk or McMahon.

The scholarship is named after Chelsea Cohen, a former Norwalk High soccer star who was the Fairfield County Sports Commission’s first Courage Award recipient. She died in 2006 after a courageous bout with a rare form of cancer of the nervous system. The Commission also presents The Chelsea Cohen Courage Award at its annual Sports Night banquet. The award recognizes the person in the sports community who has shown inspirational strength in battling life-altering obstacles.

The Sports Commission has also established  The Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy, which focuses on the healthy body, healthy mind equation and provides leadership in helping to build a generation of children leading a daily, active lifestyle.
