NEF’s board of directors is matching the Community Foundation grant to double the pool of funds available.

“Last spring NEF provided funds to Brien McMahon High School’s AP English teacher, Danielle Brown, for a Shark Tank competition amongst her students,'' NEF Executive Director Gloria Tenofsky said. "I participated on the judging panel and was overwhelmed by the inspiring ideas and superb presentation skills of the students. Like Fairfield County’s Community Foundation we are always looking for ways to give students a 'voice.' NEF decided to take Ms. Brown’s idea and amplify the impact by encouraging student groups from any of Norwalk’s 19 schools to apply.”

Students interested in applying for a Classroom Innovation grant must follow these guidelines:

  • Students may work alone or with a group.
  • They must have a staff champion from their school.
  • Ideas must enhance their school.
  • Ideas should address one or more of the following: academics, extra-curricular activities, social-emotional well being, physical health/nutrition or safety.

Proposals which can be sustained after the NEF funding period will be given priority. An NEF committee will review proposals and select finalists to present Shark Tank style to a group of community, education and business leaders.

To submit a proposal, go on the NEF website and download the application.

Students must have an educator in their school willing to champion the project and all application questions must be answered.

NEF has a longstanding tradition of supporting classroom innovation and believes that teacher quality is the single most important factor in cultivating an excellent school system.
