The grant will provide $339,443 each year, beginning Sept. 1 for the 2015-2016 budget year. TRIO funding will be used to provide comprehensive support services to 240 specially selected NCC students. NCC’s Student Support Services TRIO Program is an academic support program designed to retain students until graduation and transfer to a four-year college or university, through a series of highly integrated proactive counseling and advising, tutoring services, free summer courses and other activities.

Student Support Services TRIO provides a centralized, structured student development and retention program to annually recruited student cohorts as they work toward earning an associate degree. The TRIO Program advises and mentors 240 first generation and/ or low income students and students with disabilities within a span of not more than four years until college graduation and transfer.

“Over the last 25 years, NCC’s TRIO Program has been an ongoing advocate for, and champion of, these first generation, low-income college students and students with disabilities,” said Elva Edwards, Program Director. “The Student Support Services TRIO Program has continuously exceeded its annual targeted goals of achieving excellent persistence, grade point averages and transfer and graduation outcomes for its participants.”

The NCC TRIO Program was first funded in 1990. TRIO programs must compete every five years for refunding. Earning these grants, especially at a time when federal budgets are tight, is a highly competitive process.
