Moccia To Outline Norwalk School Safety Measures

NORWALK, Conn. – Safety measures for the city's schools will be announced at a press briefing Wednesday at 2 p.m. at City Hall, Mayor Richard Moccia announced Tuesday.

They will include police patrols, the mayor added.

Following the Newtown shooting Dec. 14, Norwalk placed an officer at each of the city’s 19 schools to help allay concerns about student safety.

The officers were at the schools until the Christmas break, but did not return afterward. In the meantime, the schools created a School Safety Planning Team to study ways to prevent school violence. Some of the committee’s findings will be discussed at the press briefing.

When reached Tuesday, Moccia would give specifics of what would be announced Wednesday, but he did tip his hand slightly. “[Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik] will give information at the briefing about patrols tomorrow.”

In addition to Moccia and Kulhawik, Interim School Superintendent Tony Daddona, Fire Chief Denis McCarthy and Emergency Management Deputy Director Michele DeLuca are expected to attend the press briefing.

Representatives of the Board of Education, Central Office and the elementary, middle and high schools, as well as public safety officials, were part of the study team, DeLuca said.
