Grant Funds Summer Program For Norwalk Students At Maritime Aquarium

NORWALK, Conn. -- Thirty Norwalk students will plunge into fun, hands-on experiences in marine biology this summer at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, thanks to a $10,000 grant from Fairfield County’s Community Foundation.

The Maritime Aquarium received a $10,000 grant to help continue its summer camp program for students.

The grant to The Maritime Aquarium will act as a scholarship for up to 30 fifth- and sixth-grade Norwalk students who otherwise could not afford to participate in “Junior Marine Biologist I,” one of the Aquarium’s most-popular summer-camp programs.

“We thank the Community Foundation for supporting us with the grant, which will allow us to make our exciting science-based summer camp available to children who otherwise might not have access,” Tom Naiman, the Aquarium’s director of education, said in a statement. “The Aquarium will work with Norwalk Public Schools and local community organizations to recruit interested 5th- and 6th-grade students and offer them places in our week-long sessions. Not only will it be fun, but it will support the science curriculum in their schools in powerful ways.”

The “Junior Marine Biologist I” program lets summer campers enter the inner workings of The Maritime Aquarium. Campers set up, stock and maintain an aquarium with live animals, while using real scientific tools to learn about water chemistry and water quality.

They also grow brine shrimp to feed their animals, dissect squid and fish, and use microscopes to view the unseen world of Long Island Sound.

Spaces in the program are available as well for students not supported by the Community Foundation grant. Cost to sign up is $450, or $400 for Maritime Aquarium members.
